A Mile Of WiFi?

A Mile Of WiFi?

For me, today was a pretty uneventful day. I struggled all day just to get one computer setup, which was frustrating because after assembling the hardware, nothing was working when I tried to install an operating system, even though all the hardware was detected. Whatever. Instead of writing a long and involved (re: boring) update about why the computer wasn’t working, I decided I’d write about what some of the other people here at Hi Tech Pioneer did today, because I think it is quite cool.

We’ve tried working with cantennas (antennas built from large cans, similar to a Pringles can but wider), but today we stepped it up a notch, when Ram climbed a red-and-white antenna tower with a 14dB high-gain omni-directional antenna hooked up to a 54Mb/s wireless router (with transmit settings boosted to 251mW in DD-WRT).

Ram Climbs The Antenna

I know, right? I feel uneasy standing on level ground, but Ram climbed the antenna without ANY support or harness or anything, and waited there as Shyami was getting tools and brackets and screwdrivers to bring to him. He stayed up there for around half an hour!

Shyami's mode of transportation was pretty ridiculous too...

So anyway, I felt like creating this page to show everyone that even on the “off” days, there is still a lot to see and do.

That’s all for now.
