Some Skype Data

Bishwa and I tested Skype over LAN again today. I sent him a 14MB file, and then we checked the amount of data set over the ADSL network during that time period.

12:03:55
Tx Total Bytes 147761099
Rx Total Bytes 342252697

12:04:25
Tx Total Bytes 147998433
Rx Total Bytes 342580296

Tx: 147998433 – 147761099 = 237334 = 237KB
Rx: 342580296 – 342252697 = 327599 = 327KB

So to sum it up, we transferred a 12,644,507 byte file (that’s 12.6MB or 12,644KB) using just 237KB (transmitted) and 327KB (received) over our ADSL line. This proves that our Skype setup was successfully forwarding packets over LAN, without usage on the ADSL network. This means we aren’t limited by the 256Kb/s ADSL download speed, rather the 100,000Kb/s network switch speed. That is good news! Telemedicine over the HTP network can happen 390x faster (3,900x faster if we get a gigabit network switch) than if we were sending that data through Nepal Telecom.

That’s all for now.
